Does fabric softener damage functional fabric?

If you are careful with your hiking and sports clothes, then you must read the washing instructions on the label and you have noticed that you should not use fabric softener on them.

But why?

The purpose of softeners

Fabric softeners became more widely used in the mid-19th century, because the washing machines, aggressive detergents and bleaches of that time made clothes rough.

The fabric softener contains substances that cover fabric fibers with a lubricating wax/silicone layer, so they feel softer.

Today, with the development of technology and detergents, fabric softeners are no longer necessary, yet we use them under the influence of marketing ads believing that they are good for the fabric.

What are the main characteristics of functional fabrics?

Their fibers are designed to wick away moisture and breathe. In contrast, the lubricating film of the softener limits this function.

If the fabric softener is used even once, it is practically impossible to wash it out of the fabric, so it can permanently damage its functional properties.

By leaving fabric softener on the store shelf, you are not only taking care of your clothes, but also the environment and your health, not to mention saving money!
